Rivets, one because they are authentic, and two, thanks to the work of folks like Plinker, HcPookie and 7.62 they are doable by the home builder.

I'm going to do rivets from now on. The tooling is getting super simple, so there's no reason not to attempt it.

I've got a common laboratory calibration procedure that may allow barrel installation without a press. I need to try it to see if it works. If it does work, it will put the barrel-in-the-freezer trick to shame. The procedure should cost about $10. I'll get back with details after I try it.

I agree with all of the above and prefer rivets. It really is not difficult to make some riveting tools and use them. I believe that either method is adequately strong enough but I prefer the looks of the rivets and that is what I do.
