Bulgarian RPK74F has begun!!

I just ordered a whole boatload of stuff to start off the Bulgarian Underfolder RPK74 project from KVAR. I have a couple questions though.....I already have a 74 bolt carrier, would that be ok to use. Also, could I use a normal 74 bolt and firing pin. Note I did order the RPK74 recoil spring, a top cover for a milled reciever, a 74 gas tube, cleaning rod (Soviet RPK74) with the support ring, of course the RPK74 barrel assembly, and last but not least a Bulgarian underfolder buttstock (wanted it for continuity). I'm planning on going ahead and doing it up on the Firing Line 74 Milled underfolder reciever. To achieve something like this:

So what do you think?

Looks like an interesting and fun project. I haven't seen a RPK underfolder before. It's always fun to build something different.

Arsenal of Bulgaria actually builds these. They have underfolders in every caliber as well as the usual clubfoot variety, but yes I was aiming to have something a bit different from the usual here in the USA.
Cool.
Can't wait to see the pics when it's done. :thumbup1:

I thought about building a RPK but the only barrels I can find are the 5.45 and I wanted to build a 7.62. So that will have to wait till I come across a decent barrel ........ if ever.
not try change subject, can you ues any RPK barrels on any AK recivers, someone said maybe need heavy recivers

You can, but true RPK recievers are not easy to get unless you use a VEPR as a donor rifle. However, Aresenal of Bulgaria uses milled recievers for their RPKs. These are the same as other milled AKs.
I heard a rumor, not sure how true, that Global Trades is planning on making a stamped RPK reciever. Coldsteel also make a 80% RPK blank. That said, try and find a RPK74 trunnion to go with the available barrels, or a nice 7.62 barrel to go with the trunnion that KVAR has. Availability is very spotty.
It will be nice when some new kits come in.
PT, I got a 7.62 RPK barrels ( not here yet) , the guy sold it to me said it should fit the stamp reciver since barrels still had the front trunion, plus we are not doing full auto build so don't need a heavy recivers? so what you think ? by the way, I know some one may still have NHM 91 RPK kit for sale
Thanks Bluejack I actually just picked up my NHM-91 tonight. I can't wait to get a Z-Recto RPK set on it. I already have a RSA trigger group and some G2 trigger groups, gotta decide which ones I want to drop in. Probably the G2. KVAR order should be here in the next day or so, they get here fast.

As long as you get a "coldsteel" RPK bent blank, you should be fine to use the RPK barrel as-is. You could mill the buldges off of the front trunion and use a standard receiver, but then there is the fact that the trunion is narrower than a standard AK trunion. A Global receiver may just be the correct thickness for an RPK trunion. Why couldn't they just make a standard barrel/receiver combo?

It is not that the RPK needs the heavy receiver for Full Auto fire, it is the fact that the trunion is narrower and fits loosely in a standard receiver. You actually should shim it in the receiver.
so what size are we looking for at front trunion, I got a russian RPK and chinese RPK coming in mail .

Thanks

Didn't that NHM-91 kit come with the trunnion? If not I believe it uses a 19mm trunnion (somebody correct me if I'm wrong).
The 7.62 RPK uses a 23mm RPK trunnion, KVAR has some right now. They are Romanian.
my RPK come with trunnion , not sure what size, and where and what type of reciver will be best for this build ?

Thanks

Your pick really, OOW may be your best bet. You don't want to use the Coldsteel RPK blank because you don't have nor can use RPK trunnions with that barrel. That said the chioce is yours.
I see, I have 20 of these Vulcan recivers at house, was think about use one of these, I just hear ppl siad the RPK trnnions is small then AK trunions so maybe need different recivers

Thanks

They'd be fine for your NHM-91, if your REAL RPK barrel has the original trunnion then you have to make a choice. You could use its trunnion but I don't know of any options other than using the Coldsteel blank, or you could use a standard trunnion in one of your Vulcan Recievers. You really have 20?
Yup

Yes I got 20 of them, get it when you can cause Joeken will not be in business for long :naughty: . $32 a reciver , $15 for the trasns fee( all 20) . why not ? well I am not sure about the trunnion. cause it look almost like the ROMAK 3 trunnion. I post pic on here later

Thats awesome Bluejack, I hope to see that many recievers on my workbench someday :) . I think the Romak III uses a RPK front trunnion. Which has lead me to wonder; if I wanted to build a Romak III, is there a reason I couldn't use a Coldsteel RPK blank? If I was able to, then I could use a standard AK buttstock and pistol grip.
I think you are right, the RPK front trunnion almost fit the Romak III reciver. I think just going use different trunnion , this way I can use these recivers
Whew!!

This thing is costing me a small fortune in AK terms. Talked to Firing Line today to get a quote on having them build and moly coat her. OW! The only thing I can say is its gonna be sweet. Between it being a 5.45, the 24" heavy barrel, and the milled receiver I'll have my own personal SAW (semi-auto of course :) ) with a recoil probably less than a .22. It will definitely be the prize of my collection.
