I want to build a gun to look like a small Romak, I was looking to buy parts because I did not want to chop up a compleat kit but I guess it will be the cheapest way. so I am looking at a AMD63.
so here is my question. what is involved to get a standard hand guard set up on the front and dump the front pistol grip.
also can I put nice blond wood on the amd63 gas piston.
the amd 63 is like $150, anyone have a suggestion for a cheaper way to go. I realy do not want a amd65 because of the short barrel.
I have a tang and rear stock allready, so a kit with nice blond front grip in it allready would be nice but not erquired. if I can get a kit cheap enough I can afford to buy front grips later. any suggestions are appreciated. :thankyou:

The below picture is of a AMD 63 that has been converted over to look like a SA-85

The gas tube is a standard length unlike the AMD65
You just have to modify the lower to fit that retainer.

The gun shown is owned by Z_recto. He modified the lower handguard.

I am sure he can make whatever you want in the way of wood.

Below is a picture of a "work in progress"

It is a AMD 65 with a early romanian underfolder.
It has polish handguards and a polish laminated grip.

now I am thinking about the romanian kit from I.O. it is only like $119 instead of $149 for the amd63 and NO modifications needed to use a wood hand guard.
yes that front end is allmost exactly what I want. I am thinking a barrel extention and a brake that looks like a romak brake .,, presto lil romak.

I bought a rear stock that looks just like a romak stock, from clasic arms when they had them for a few bucks, it even has a spring loaded but plate. nice.

SKS ,,, no I realy do not want to get into another ammo size. you know how I get. ware would I put all the crates????

if Z_recto could make me a front grip set like that BUT with a few notches cut in it like a romak , I would be a very happy man.. HOO HOO that would be sweet.
the romak has a laminated stock , but blond front grips

OK what do you guys think ?? am I foolish to do the extra work and spend money to make a lil romak? I think it would look good in the rack next to each other. but what do I know.

centerfire only has a few amd63's left and they are $125 each now.

Hotbarrel, kevin has never made hardwood handguards, only laminated.
I will talk to him today and see what he can do for you.

Basically you want the standard sa-85 style handguards but with the slots like the below pictures

OHHH BABY THAT IS THE ONE. something even close would be great, I would realy appreciate it if you spoke to him. I need themto fit rite on a standard AK front end. I am not in a huge rush. but I am shurly going to do this now one way or another.
I have to decide on a 63 kit from CF or a romanian kit from IO, I think the IO kit may end up cheaper, all I will need to do is change over the wood.
I realy think I am going to make my own brake to look as close as I can .... unless I can find a real Romak brake someware. I cant wate to get started!!!! I am going to order a kit teusday one way or another!!!!
thanks hor the help and encouragement guys.

Kevin said he can do it, but this is the probs
(1) He doesn't make handguards anymore, too much work
(2) Even if he did make one, and for me he would, he doesn't make them in Hardwood, only laminate
(3) He does not have any spare Hungarian Blond handguards, he said he you could find one, he would modify it.

HB, I just had a brainstorm (as I was typing this), and I think you are the man that can do the mods.

You use a AK that has a standard length tube, like a amd63 or romainian.

You cut the end so there is only 1/4 from gas block to handguard flange.
This will allow enough room to flair it to mate up with the gas block.
You then cut the tube in half. Go find a amd65 tube and use it to make a center section.
You then move the lower handguard retainer to match up with the now longer upper flange.

Basically it will kinda look like the below picture.
Remember that this will be a TOTAL custom.
The handguards will have to be made, but I think it is do-able.

Maybe modify a SKS upper, and build a new lower.
I am not sure on the dimensions on the SKS upper (gas tube wood) if it will work or not, but it might.
What ya think.... My picture is just a cut and paste deal

In the picture above, that is a MAK90
The gas block is in the factory location.
I only moved the lower handguard retainer and did the gas tube mod's.

I think it will work.

If your friend can find a set and make the notches I would definatly square up with him. Other wise I think I will start by cutting notches in the guards in the kit I buy. maby even try to bleach them if I need. If I screw them up at least I will have got some practise, and I will buy a set.
thinking about it .... if he could cut notches similar in look to the romak in laminated I mould be fine with that too. honestly I allways prefer laminated and the only reason I am thinking blond at all this time is the romak look. I even have a laminated lower in my box o parts now that I think about it..... HMMMM maby I could practise on it HMMMM.
I do like your idea and the photo. I am definatly going to think on it. the custom wood would be the biggest trouble to me. the metal work is very doable. I like it.
thatnk for the help
