Slaying of woman baffles friends
Mother-to-be stabbed 33 times in chest, neck

The 2200 block of North Sibley Street is a typical suburban street, a row of mostly three-bedroom brick houses built in the 1960s and 1970s where the lawns are well kept and many of the residents have lived for two decades.

As Metairie goes, it is remarkable only because it is so hard to reach, with access cut off by broad drainage canals to the east and south. Neighbors call it a peaceful area where the biggest disruption of late had been the daylong cacophony of nearby construction crews extending West Napoleon Avenue.

All of which makes Friday's slaying of pregnant teacher Iman Muhanna Mohammed all the more baffling.

No arrests have been made, and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office parted with few new details Monday. Among them were the autopsy results that Mohammed, 42, was stabbed 33 times in her chest, shoulders, back and neck, including some defensive cuts. The coroner's office ruled that a blow to the side of her neck was the fatal wound, Sheriff Harry Lee said.

Detectives are investigating the case as a double homicide because Mohammed was six months pregnant, Lee said, but Mohammed's abdomen had no wounds.

The weapon has not been found.

"This is a horrible and shocking murder for us," said Nabil Ahmad, a family friend who is acting as spokesman for Mohammed's relatives. "What makes it more shocking is this is a safe area and she was very well-liked."

Fakhri Mohammed, 45, found his wife's body Friday about 11:15 a.m. when he returned home after driving the couple's two children to school at the Muslim Academy in Harvey. Mohammed, a taxi driver, and his wife, a teacher on maternity leave from the school, were both U.S. citizens born in Palestinian territory. Lee said Mohammed and the rest of the family are cooperating with the investigation.

Iman Mohammed was a sister-in-law of Abdelhaleem Ashqar, an Alexandria, Va., resident who is a minor candidate in the Jan. 9 Palestinian presidential election to choose a successor to Yasser Arafat. Ashqar, who is married to a sister of Iman Mohammed's, faces federal racketeering charges in connection with alleged fund raising for the Palestinian group Hamas, which the U.S. government has identified as a terrorist organization.

Ashqar, and other relatives of the Mohammeds, said they have no reason to think her killing is connected to Ashqar's candidacy or that it was a hate crime.

"We have no suspicions at this point of any motive, and we're waiting for the agencies involved to finish their investigation," said Ashqar, who says he is innocent of the racketeering charges.

Lee said detectives have no evidence that the killing was a hate crime. The FBI is monitoring the investigation in case such evidence surfaces, because of Iman Mohammed's Palestinian heritage, spokeswoman Sheila Thorne said.

Neither Lee nor Thorne would discuss possible links between Ashqar's presidential candidacy and his sister-in-law's death.

Lee said no valuables seem to have been taken from the Mohammed home and there was no signs of forced entry. Ahmad, the family spokesman, said Mohammed's purse and jewelry were sitting on her dresser when her body was found.

Lee said the evidence so far points to a struggle confined to the bedroom where she was found. He said detectives do not know whether there was more than one attacker. Some blood was found in the house's entryway and is being tested to determine the source.

On Monday afternoon, investigators still were working at the two-story brick home just north of the West Napoleon Avenue extension. Ashqar said his wife, one of Iman Mohammed's five siblings, has traveled to Metairie from Virginia.

"They were very close. My wife is shocked, as we all are," Ashqar said.

The Mohammeds were a popular couple who met in the early 1990s during a trip Fakhri Mohammed made to the Gaza Strip, where his future wife, then Iman Jamal, lived, relatives said. He traveled back and forth during their courtship, and they returned to the United States together after marrying in 1995.

They settled near Lafreniere Park in Metairie and liked the area so much that they bought the North Sibley house less than a mile from the park in 2000, according to property records. Soon after moving in, they threw an open house and invited the entire block, a neighbor said.

Mohammed's daughter from a previous marriage lived with the couple, who together had a son. Relatives said the Mohammeds were looking forward to the birth of the child she was carrying, a girl. They had not settled on a name for her.

Lee said Mohammed's ex-wife, who lives in the New Orleans area, also is cooperating with the investigation.

As the last person known to see Iman Mohammed alive, Fakhri Mohammed remains a possible suspect in the case, but Lee said Mohammed is cooperating extensively and indicated that detectives have no evidence against him.

"We have no reason to believe anything he's telling us is false," Lee said.

Ahmad, the family spokesman, said Fakhri Mohammed is "grieving and taking care of his two children. . . . It's a hard situation."

Stabbing someone 33 times is not a 'random' act. That's a very vicious killing and more than likely pre-meditated.

Actually, the 33 stab wounds I should think more likely indicate a spontaneous and possibly psychotic act of rage. I dunno about you, but when I murder someone in cold blood, I do it quickly and efficiently and don't stick around to stab them 32 times more than I really have to.

I hardly ever stab anyone more than 30 times.
