Maybe Pearl Harbor was not a surprise attack?
The History Channel is revisiting the notion that President Roosevelt knew about the attack in advance, but withheld that information. In a 60 minute installment of the Conspiracy? series, entitled FDR and Pearl Harbor, the long discredited notion is examined again with recently discovered documents.
Frankly, I simply can?t, or won?t, believe FDR willingly allowed the country?s greatest military asset, our Pacific fleet, to be destroyed, so he could take the country into war with a crippled Navy and weak army. As Zell Miller might say, a war fought by what ? "spitballs?" Before Pearl Harbor, our country ranked 11th in the world militarily with our navy intact! We were hardly ready to battle Axis powers with an undermanned and ill equipped army and half our battle fleet crippled or sunk.
But ? maybe, FDR figured there would be minimal losses at Pearl Harbor? After all, there was a belief in segregated America (and elsewhere) that whites were superior. Could the little, yellow Japanese do much damage to the mighty fleet at Pearl? Did FDR underestimate the ability of Imperial Japan?s impressive Navy?
Congress investigated Pearl Harbor in 1946. There were also investigations by the Army and Navy. No conspiracy was found, nor indicated. Still, the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor gave FDR a just cause for War during a time in which 70-80% of Americans wanted no part of the raging global conflict. Many still remembered how our involvement in WW1 resulted in nothing but ridicule from the same countries we aided ? France and Great Britain. Few Americans were willing to again sacrifice our men and resources to bail out the snooty Brits and haughty French in yet another war with Germany. According to several authorities, including Stephen Budiansky author of ?Battle of Wits,? FDR calculated Hitler would declare war on the US, if War broke out between America and Japan, his Tripartite partner. So, an attack on Pearl would likely thrust the US into WW2 against Germany. It is a plausible theory.
There are still classified documents which could shed more light on the matter. Perhaps, the matter will always fester? You can see the newly released documents on which the recent Conspiracy theory is based at: Conspiracy?. They include the Bomb Plot Message, the Lietweiller memo, and the Lurline Log Receipt.
