Has anyone built a AR 15 in 243 Win.

Been out of the game for several years. And have started building a few 5.56 kits, but when a did a lot of hunting the 243 was my favorite cal. I saw in the Shot Gun News that Olympic Arms Inc. offers a 243 upper. I was wondering would you have to use a 308 lower and also the 308 mags?
It is my personal opion that the 243 AR would be a real good rifle. I would like to hear from you all, pros and cons.
Thanks

The only Olympic 243 upper I've seen was the 243 SSM. I've been tempted to get one as well, but for the cost I'd rather throw that money into an AR10 platform and build one in 243 Win.
Moleman, Thanks for the info. Like i said, i have been out of the game, where would be the best place to read up about the AR 10 system?
Thanks

DPMS, Armalite, Stoner, Remington and others make ar10's which operate just like the ar15's.
I will do a google search and look up the AR 10. I am still trying to figure out the M4, from what I can tell it uses a piston system like the AK? But untill I can get my hands on one to see it, or a drawing that will so me the perpestive.
Thanks

There are some companies making ar15's/m4's with a gas piston set up, direct impingement is still the standard gas system.
Been doing a little searching on the AR 10, but havn't found out much. Can you tell me what the differnce is between the AR15 and the AR10?
Thanks

JSE Surplus

the link has a bunch of 308 type ar-15 parts, uppers, bolts and so on.

the 243 will require the larger AR-10 type framed parts.

ever consider building a 7.62x39 ar-15 though? -- much fun to shoot--
Thanks guys! I am not fond of the 7.62x39, good cartidge in a short AR or AK. I want something that will reach out there a little ways. I believe if I get some of my other guns sold I am going to build a 243WSSM. I looked the balistics up on that cartidge and I think it will work good for what I want.
Thanks

I worry about the longevity of the 243wssm. Most places don't carry that ammo as it is and unless it really takes off which it hasn't yet, down the road you might have a hard time finding brass. Thats the main reason I haven't bought a 223 and 243 wssm upper.
I figure if you buy 500 new brass that should last me my life. It most likely won't be very popular, maybe buy a 1000 new brass and I know that would last me.
If i get the funds, I will let you know how it shoots.
Thanks

I built one in 6mm223 nice caliber but ya run out of places to put the powder in the case with long bullets... I like it anyway for shooting 95 gr bullets.. B2B

I've had at least one 6x45mm/6mm-223 for the past 15-20 years or so. I have often thought about getting a 6mm TCU reamer to open up the chamber some. I think the ease of just using the 6x45 die on 223 brass beats out any gains you'd acheive by going the TCU route, plus you'd add the fire form step.

ever consider the 6.5 grendel for long range? it will fit in the standard 5.56 ar-15 action.:nanabang:

ammo can be a bit high but wolf can still be found for $15 a box. if you re-load it don't cost much more to shoot than anything else.
.243 would be an easy conversion for an AR10........pretty much the only change would be a custom barrel.......mags should be the same....bolt and carrier is the same......

If I had a reamer it wouldn't be that big a deal to knock out....just need a blank, a chamber reamer and headspace guages, and an AR10 barrel extension.
Shoot one of these .243 WSSM few years ago, you can find these ammo easy at your local walmart
I inquired Oly Arms about buying the WSSM bolt a while back and they wouldn't sell me one without buy a complete top end. So much for DIY.
Remington makes a AR platform in .243 cal
i was told Bushmaster makes it for them....

Gander MT had one , kinda heavy though
