How to measure overall lenght???

The overall length of a weapon made from a shotgun or rifle is the distance
between the extreme ends of the weapon measured along a line parallel to

I didn't actually find the reference there to "being closed", but I would count on it.

thanks for the reference. some people are building amd 65 and lengthening the bbl to 16.125 and measuring the muzzle to extreme point of pistol grip.

i'm soldering triangle shaped sling loops to the rear trunnion to get the strait line, and the sling point.

The OAL is measured with the stock open.

Ok, but when the ban is gone how is it measured stock open or closed? And where is the documentation? I have one with the welded stock open which I want to correct in Sept. I also want to remain legal.

The ban will have no effect on the length. It is covered in the '68 GCA and NFA.

It (the awb) has to do with folder/telescoping, flash hiders and bayo lugs assuming of course you have a detachable magazine and a pistol grip...

The 26" OAL was was part of the National Firearms Act of 1934.

Don't look for it to change anytime soon

OK, again , the OAL length of a folding stock rifle is measured from the muzzle to the butt,in the extended position.

The USC definition of a rifle includes the term 'intended to be fired from the shoulder' , hence the OAL is measured from the muzzle to the end of the stock,WITH the stock extended.

For illustration, a Norinco Type 56s folding stock rifle measures 25 3/4 " in length WITH THE STOCK FOLDED. If the OAL length were measured with the stock folded, this rifle would be illegal, and I can assure you the Anti's would have prosecuted anyone who owned one.

The Type 56s folding stock rifle I-S legal , was ATF approved for importation , and was legally sold as a Title 1 firearm.

THE OAL LENGTH OF A FOLDING STOCK RIFLE IS MEASURED WITH THE STOCK IN THE OPEN POSITION.

*note* - I am addressing folding stock rifles not rifles with the stock welded closed.

Thanks T66, you answered my question and I was able to verify the info. I fully understand the 26" overall length was not part of the 94 ban (as some have pointed out). However the folding stock on post ban rifles was part of the ban. My folding stock is now welded open. If I remove the weld, the overall length with the stock closed will be under the 26 inches.

The clarification with references will help with my comfort level when Sept arrives.

I have plans on a Polish PMKMS build utilizing the underfolder. I noted that the OAL with the stock folded is approx 25.75 inches.
