Just Agreed To Buy A Complete Lower

875 Views 18 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  j427x
Well, after looking around town, I found a stripped lower for $100 plus tax. I know lower parts kits go for around $70 + shipping. Also, I'd still have to buy a stock, stock tube, buffer and spring + shipping.

So, I agreed to buy a complete lower from a guy that lives a few miles down the road. Found it on an auction sight. The price is $235 plus tax. It'll be around $250-$255 out the door, and he'll handle the FFl himself. So, no shipping charge and no FFL fee, just local tax on top of the price.

It's a S&W marked reciever, with all DPMS parts inside, and it comes with a 6 position stock.

How'd I do? I figured that it's a little less than I could build one for, and a lot less hassle.

Now I've got to figure out what upper I want for it. I was hot for a DSA, but then I read that their FSB's are not "F" marked. And due to that, the FSBs ears are lower than they should be. Many have replaced the front sight with a taller one, but it then sticks up above the ears.

Hmmm, we'll see.

That sounds good, build it like you want it. They're lego guns and if there's something you don't like it's easy to change. I usually only put a fixed front sight/gas block on guns that are going to have an A1 or A2 upper. For flat tops I put a rail gas block on them or a low profile gas block. So for me the non "F" marked front sight wouldn't matter.
Del-ton also has a couple of uppers that I'm interested in.

One is a pencil barrel, and the other a mid-length.

Now I'm starting to think about things like: barrel steel, feed ramps, staking on the bolt carrier and other things. Looking for a quality rifle at a good price.

Seriously trying to put it all together for under $700

s&w makes a very nice lower. DPMS lower parts kits --at least the ones i have been getting lately have all been first class. you should be good to go on the lower.

on the upper it depends on what your wanting to do really. if you want the best get a LMT it will run $400+ with no bolt carrier or hand guard. toss in some real m-4 hand-guards for another $30 and one of those BCM bolt carriers and charging handle another $160. --what this adds up to about $825+ for the whole package. so your going to go way over budget with this one.

if you keep listening to all those mall ninjas their going to get your head so screwed up that if it ain't made out of pure gold you ain't spent enough.

i haven't bought an upper in a few years. it isn't that hard to build your own.

i suppose if i had to buy one --hey--wasn't there a budget upper on the other day??

other than that i would say a del-ton or a JT/doublestar would be a good bet.

on barrel steel the 4150cv is the best but it is expensive i only get it for one in 7 twist barrels. it isn't really worth it for a semi-automatic. a 4140 steel barrel with 1 in 9 twist will last more rounds that your likely to ever shoot. stainless is also very good in some rifle systems. a rifle with one in 9 twist is a better all around fit. they can shoot 50gr up to about 74gr. since most ammo is under this weight it would be a logical pick. --

i like chrome lined barrels but i have a number of barrels with no chrome and they function very well. i would say get the chrome if it is not costing you an arm and a leg.

the nato chamber is the best--
m4 ramps there supposedly needed for the longer bullets like the mk262 rounds. i fired a hundred or so out of a rifle without the m-4 ramps --it shot them fine. i think the ramps are more of a colt gimmick although they don't hurt if their matched with the barrel.

bolt carriers i like LMT, BCM and DD. for those --although JT and CMT i have heard good things about them. i prefer the heavy m16 carrier and most of the time run a regular carbine buffer.

J4.

Now could American Rage SBR that if he filled out the proper paper work and got a tax stamp?
Now could American Rage SBR that if he filled out the proper paper work and got a tax stamp?

oh yes! and he could do a 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 as well!

i love the sbr but can't stand the paperwork or handing the government $200. but when i win the lotto i going to buy a hand full of SBR tax stamps!--

to the OP.

ADCO has some good prices on rock river complete uppers as does legal transfers. rock river is not at the top of those mall ninja charts but they do have a very good reputation among shooters.

one last thing. ever consider building your own upper? it is a bit more involved than a kit with an assembled upper. but you can get what you want and save some money on a high end build.

the reason i say this is that midway has the excellent stripped daniel defense (DD) one in 7 twist stripped barrel for $169 it is fully chromed and made from machine gun barrel steel the 4150cv type.

i could build that easy and pirate could too. if you were handy with tools you could DIY. there are also some nice stainless steel barrels on the market reasonable --and there are the conversion barrels like 7.62 and 5.45 most of the good priced barrels are the m4 type in 16" .

the biggest problem with the AR platform is deciding what you want--m4, rifle or mid length and what round to use.

PS i have bought a bunch of ar-15 stuff from these JSE folks. they are super easy to work with. all the parts i have got have been first rate. mostly Del-ton and DPMS made stuff.

i think these uppers are del-ton units they assembled in their shop.

DSA is having problems getting stuff shipped as their deep back ordered.

i don't see how the non-F marked fs-post is much of a problem on their m4 upper. there are millions of non f-FSB rifles and carbines out there that run like all get out. and most people scope the ar anyways.

though they are a little more $$ check out DSA's mid-length upper if you can stand to wait three weeks or more.

there are plenty of options on good ar-15/m4 uppers these days you just have to sort through them and decide what you want.Lowers & Uppers-D S Arms

the mid length and the chrome lined one in 7 inch m4 for $325--i can't even build one for that.

as far as the "F"marked FSB

i have two barrels with out the "F" marking they are expensive wilson 7.62 and 5.45 barrels. when i compared them to the "F" marked front sight base on the charles daily defense upper--they are the same height as best i can tell. since i only have two without the "F" marking i can't say they are all the same height. but it is telling that at least some are the same height as the "F" marked ones..

Good info.

I just have a gut feeling the SBRs are going to be the investment of our times.
Just like the legal full auto investments that got people rich.
If they stop SBRs. The ones that are out there are going too be worth $$$$.
Maybe something to looking into American Rage. :dunno:

might well be the case. the feds may stop issuing sbr permits in the name of stopping crime.

though i doubt the mexican drug cartel is applying for any permits as it is.
No SBR for me, gentlemen.

I try to stay as far away from the ATF as possible.

However, that's not to say that I wouldn't build a pistol someday.

But this lower will be dedicated to a 16" mid-length, or perhaps a lightweight, pencil barrel.

If I had to guess right now, I'd say it'll be for a middie.

Thanks for all your help.

I just picked up my lower. Wow! I'm so glad I bought it. It's a S&W receiver with all DPMS parts, and a 6 position adjustable stock! All for $253 dollars out the door!

That's less than I could have built it for!! Can't wait to pick out an upper to go with it. Fact is that I'm so happy, I might talk to the dealer about an SP1 clone in a few months!!!!!!!!!!!

i built a del-ton middy either last year or year before last. very sweet shooter. very smooth operation.

it has no m-4 ramps and the heavy barrel is .750 all the way to the Flash hider. for what it costs it can't be beat though.

my 6.5g is a middy too and it has the government profile barrel--which is cut down. it is much lighter than the del-ton. some mid-length are cut down and some arn't so before you buy one it pays to look at some photos or ask if you want the lighter barrel.

i am thinking of re drilling my new m4 7.62x39 barrel to mid length--they are the cats ass in the 16& 18" lengths.

Just great, I was looking at a Delton, but now you tell me they don't have M4 feedramps!

Crap!

Now I have no clue as to what to buy for an upper.

m4 feed ramps don't mean squat. that is just some BS colt dreamed up to to get more $$$ for an m4 from the DOD.

quit looking at that fricking mall-ninja chart! all that chart will do is fuck your head up! LOL!

i have fired 10,000s of rounds through m-16s without the ramps they ran fine as does this del ton middy.

the m4 ramps are not needed on any rifle firing 5.56, they might help on one firing the 77gr mk262 round but even then it is iffy--

i am not too sure there needed on my odd cal rifles like 6.5,7.62 and 5.45 but i can see where the ramps might help with those rounds.

i do know del-ton shipped a lot of m4 uppers without the ramps last year and all the middy ones i have seen didn't have the ramps.

during the panic all kinds of parts were shortage items.

this year they may be shipping everything with m4 ramps as m4 like stuff in now standard for most barrels and uppers.

all the barrels and uppers i have bought lately have had m4 ramps. it is kind of hard to not get m4 ramped stuff this year. just the opposite of last year.
American Rage..

j4 is correct.. I cant fit anymore AKs in my gun room so I figured the M-16s or what ever the hell you young whipper snappers call them nowadays would fit in the pile.
Damn. AKs are simple. Buy and build.
ARs.
"Yes here are your choices Sir what would you like?"
Yah hit the damn bolt choice button and 76 bolts come up.
1- Chrome plated
2- Titanium plated.
3- Non plated super lock 12 hub.
4- Black 18 lug kryptonite. :w00t1::loopeye::dunno:

I just hit the send button on my phone.
"Hello ProjectGuns. Build it." :)
Now I am starting to hate Mall Ninjas. They caused this problem. :)

an entire industry has come up around building the ar-15 series. tons of optional stuff that don't do anything but soak up money.

from my personal experience with the weapon there is not much evidence that expensive is much better.

in military weapons 90% of the cost goes into that last 10% of improvements. most folks can't shoot even 50% of what the rifle can do so there is a lot of waste there.

the m16a1 i carried while in the peace core only costs uncle sam $228. besides being a bit loose fitting it was a fine rifle. and it had all the shit on the god chart! so there is a bit of $$$ gouging of the mall-ninjas.

i figure a fellow that knew what he was doing could build a very nice basic ar-15 rifle for under $500. it might not have all the god chart BS. yet it would run and shoot just as good. corrected for inflation the price would actually be a bit less than the $228 government contract m16s of the good old days.
