I have ordered an ACE blank and from the pictures I dont think it has what I think is called a "magazine dimple". I have read on the forum there is some kind of jig for creating this? Where do I get such a jig and is the dimple necessary?

thank you

Most of the lower rails that are available have an extra bend on the bottom that serves to support the top of the magazine. The function of the dimples and extra rail bend help keep the magazine from wiggling around which could cause alignment problems with the stripper lug on the bolt.

Because of the extra bend on most lower rails, you do not need the dimples. However, some folks consider the dimples to be necessary for proper AK appearance. The dimples do add an extra dimension of detail to a homebuild, but aren't necessary. If you do want to put magwell dimples on your builds, the jigs made by Machman and HCPookie will both get the job done.

Machman sells his jigs for a pretty reasonable price. HCPookie is currently moving all of his belongings to a new town (due to a new job) and said he should have his site back up soon. HC has pictures of his dimple jig for others to use as an example to build their own. Both jigs can be used in a big bench vise or with a hydraulic press. They may even be usable with a hammer...

Rhino has pretty much said it all. I payed $30 I think for machman's jig which included shipping. He includes instrcutions on how to use it and it works good. My SAR1 has the traditional dimples. The jig I got makes dimples that aren't as long as the dimples on the SAR but do look nice and "function" great to stabilize the mag.

This was posted at jig for sale Also machman is a member here at gunco. Sending him a PM may be easiest.

I now have a fews sets available for delivery.

This is a fixture that I have created to make dimples in prebent blanks. I can only recommend using this set on blanks that do not have the magwell cutout. Also, this set cannot be used if the front trunion is installed. A press is definatly recommended but not required. A good vise can be used. Also, a good magnet like a Mighty Mag is very helpful in keeping everything lined up.

I have achieved great results with this set. Each set will be shipped with a basic instruction sheet. Cost for each set is $40 including shipping via Priority mail with delivery conformation. MO or paypal accepted. $40 INCLUDES SHIPPING.

I will be glad to answer any question. Please PM me for availabilty of a set. Let me know how you want to pay when you respond. Paypal or MO. Respond by PM or here on this post. I have a filter on my E-mail and might not get your E-mail for a couple of days.

Thanks,

You might try to make Hcpookie's version. I'm trying to make his version of the rivet squezer right now. I believe he has one of the best do it youself sites there is !!
I have Machman's jig, and I love it, but as others have stated it is shorter than most of the European dimples(I think it was patterned on the Chinese dimple). But remember it is almost entirely cosmetic with the newer rails.

I used machman's kit to make the dimples on this ACE ARMS pre-bent blank.

All you have to do is get it lined up and you're good to go. It's also a good idea to do the magwell cutout after the dimples, to prevent the cutout from being distorted.
