I am looking to buy a mauser bolt action gun. I have seen the term buffel cut and was wanting to know what this is? I have seen a Mitchell Mauser at a gun shop for $395 it looked new but I think the price is high. I saw a Yugo for $125 but it looked some what used? I would give what it is worth just don't want to get burned.

When I get some money up I am going to go to the shows to try and find one. Is there any thing I need to look out for.

Thanks for the looks and any help.

It depends on what you want. The standard 98 action is the most poplular and then there is the M48 which is a version of the 98. I have 2 and 1 is great then other was a gunsmith special from Century. The barrel was a stovepipe and it might be an okay shooter. Then there are Swedes which are supposed to be the nicest and I had one which was a really nice gun, but ammo was harder to come by and expensive.

Turks can be nice, but many are beat to hell. Persian Mausers in GC are truly nice.

There are all the other lesser known 93-95 actions too. If it were me I would get an M48 in GC again or a K98 capture you can actually inspect first since they can be good or bad shape. VZ-24'S are nice too if you don't mind the straight bolt.

For bent bolt the 48 is probably easiest to find right now.

I have been shopping for a Mauser 98, but the prices throw me off. I see one in decent shape that is a somewhat reasonable price and then one in fair to poor shape that is ridiculously priced. I can only guess that this has to do with the markings. I'm not looking for a all-matching-numbers-with-nazi-cartouches rifle. I want something that is shootable and isn't beat to hell. If the numbers don't match, oh well.

I was told the Yugo is a pretty decent rifle as an alternative to the Mauser. There is a conversion to .45ACP that would be great if I found one cheap with a trashed barrel.

Right now, I jumped on the Centerfire Systems Enfield rifle special. They had the #4 Mark 1 for $139. It's not exactly what I wanted, but the price was good. If the rifle is in decent shape, it'll be worth it. I'll keep shopping for a Mauser and keep putting money in the budget...

I actually ordered an Enfield from AIM Yesterday myself (Sorry Lois) Same price except $10 extra for micrometer rear sights on a No.1 Mk4. It's not that I don't like Centerfire (I do) it's that I buy a ton of stuff from AIM and they are 30 mins away too.

My first No.1 Mk4 is a fine shooting rifle and was my first real C&R when I got back into the gun thing 3 years ago.

I was thinking about a 98 with all matching numbers and not so beat the hell and back as long as it looks good. I would want it to shot straight as well.

I don't care for nazi marks but it would be a plus.

How much should this cost me on the scale of low to higher end price range.

Thanks

The Mausers are all nice, all of them, some are just nicer than others. I really like to shoot my Swedes if for no other reason than they don't tend to kick the snot out of you like a day of shooting 8mm. I would have to say that best bang for the buck goes to the Yugo M48or 48A though. If you look you can still find these rifles in excellent condition for 125.00 or so. I bought a couple from Coles a few years back for something like $110.00 shipped and they were in absolutely fabulous shape. I've got some Turks and a nice Argentine and like I said, they really are all nice rifles.
The Enfields I like just as much if not more. My youngest one is 16 and, due somewhat in part to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, loves to shoot the Enfields. I showed him the proper form on manipulating the bolt like one of Her Majesty's finest and he has a blast for sure. The .303 doesn't kick as hard, non-corrosive ammo is more readily available, and I sure love the peep sights too.

Do you mean a N0.4 Mk1? I don't think there is such a thing as a No.1 with micrometer sights on it is there? I ordered up a Canadian Longbranch from Lois in hopes of it coming in with no micrometer sights. I'd like to own just one Enfield with the early flip style sights.

It is hard to find a more robust rifle for the money than a Yugo Mauser. I also have a RC K98 which is great history but I don't think as well made as the Yugo.

I bought an Aussie Enfield No. 1 MkIII yesterday from Centerfire. I like AIM, but I don't like paying sales tax and driving there uses up a lot of gas and time.

I'm currently torn between getting an Enfield from AIM or getting a new shotty barrel and Winchester spotting scope from outdoor sports at dealer price because of my FFL and then in betwenn that buying Lego for my M4ogery :scared: I loved shooting Swingsets last Maysville meet, now I could get it all and then I only have my Wife to deal with :help:
