I did some more work on my Mini Romak idea. Tonight I made the barrel extention. it is not totaly finished yet but allmost, it think it will look prety good when it is all finisted. I think I will do some mill work the open the holes up into slots like the real romak. maby later. also I have to finish the end that will attach the the end of the originag barrel. the entire extention is 6 3/4" long. I stepped down the evry end to accomidate the bayonet ring, and I think I will make a lug and weld it on before I finish it. I figure what the heck, I bought a romanian bayo ant it is just like new , pluss the Romak has a boyo. I think they will look sweet next to each other when done.
as allways sorry for the poor photo quality . $29 dont give you much of a digital camera.

That looks great HB, glad you're able to work on it. I was worried that you'd have to put it on hold. :thumbup1:

thanks buddy
it is hard to tell by the photo but I made the berrel section the same size as the AK barrel and the brake is larger diameter to match. again crappy camera. so far the mini is looking good . I think I will go snap a pic of it and post it here , ,,,, back in a few....

Holy moly hotbarrel! Are you doing this work with just one hand! My dad was from Pennsylvania and he always said that you can't keep a good yankee down!

That old South Bend must be running pretty well! Great work! As always; you are an inspiration to us all!

I am feling unshure now after looking at,,, looks funny. keep in mind I have not parked it yet and I have not welded on the bayo lug on yet. maby I have been stareing too long at it , what do you think , BEFORE I WELD it on.
keep going????
scrap the extention??
other suggestions????
I will hold off a day or so for oppinions before it is on for good, or I toss it.

DONT BE SHY NEW GUYS, OLD TIMERS, EVRYONE, what should I do.

as for my hand ,,, it is a LOT better the burn specialest was about shocked the other day. it changed over night a lot. I pulled all the old skin off and it looks better too. I have to keep it greased and wrapped but it is much better, nobody can explain what happened the other night. .... a merical.. for shure. maby back to work in a few weeks . not Chritmass

I like it a lot. Thats very nice work. My only question that I think would make it look better would be, can you move the front sight on to the barrel extention?

I think you have been looking at it too long, 'cause it looks good. If you are really not happy maybe P.T.'s idea would help as that would make it look more like it's big brother.

I really like the looks of the front sight on the extension that you made! I wonder how you are going to keep the extension co axial with the barrel while you weld it on? The extension looks a little droopy in one of the pictures.

What are the internal dimensions of the extension? 0.314" or larger? You sure do not want bullets to be bouncing around inside of that thing! Other wise it will act as a bloop tube. Gasses may upset the bullet, causing it to yaw the micro second that the bullet leaves the original muzzle.

I just don't have enough experiance with any of this to be of any real help! However, I do know that what you have done so far looks fantastic!

Great news about your hand! Keep it clean! Take your meds! Don't wear that glove too long. That wound has got to heal properly! You have your whole life ahead of you to build a better mouse trap!

thanks to you guys that bothered to post in!!!
I forget the exact size hole but it is much bigger than the diameter of the bullet. no I do not want the bullet to bounce around inside their. The brake is a larger diameter so it has a larger diameter hole in it. the hole in the brake is 1,7/8" deep and just over 1/2" diameter. I am telling myself , if it was not safe their would not be all those AMD extentions out their. I hope....
as for attaching the extention. this is my plan SO FAR.
the end of the extention and nut have beed tapered to accept a fill weld
#1, turn a shaft about 10" long, it will fit down into the barrel about 4".their will be a step in the diameter and the rest of it will fit through the extention. the fit will be a nice fit hopefully zero clearance but not tight. this will hold the extention in align. then it will be nocked out up through the barrel with a smaller diameter rod.
#2, put the barrel nut on snug to the end of the barrel to cover the threads. it will go on backwards to give a heavy end against the extention for welding.
#3, slide the thin end of the alignment rod into the barrel.
#4, push the sight base on the extention, then slide the extention down onto the alignment rod.
#5, turn the extention to position the holes ware I want them, and one tac weld extention to nut. cool.
#6, tac weld the opposet side, cool
#7, now with a tac weld on top and bottom I will tac both sides cooling between each one. now I can continue to do small tac welds , cooling between each one.
#8, unscrew extention with the nut to be shure no weld had flowed through, if any dimpels have flowed through they can be drilled out now easy.
#9, screw extention back on and conferm alignment with the pin. adjust if needed.
#10, now finish the weld with a lot of stops for cooling.
#11, unscrew again , chuck up in lathe and do whatever is needed to make the weld area invisable, turn , file, sand. whatever.
#12, screw back on tight with holes in desired finished position, check alignment with pin.
#13, drill two holes through nut deep enough to make dimpels into the threads on barrel, unscrew extention and tap holes, screw back on and put in set screws to hold perminatly. weld over set screws.
#14, position front sight and reinstall mount pins.
this is the same set screw, method I allways use for mounting a brake.
doing it this way all I have to do is drill out screws and I can remove the entire extention with no loss to the original parts!!!

I am going to buy a nice scope just like my romak and install it on the extra mount that came the romak..HOWEVER,, I am not going to buy it till I get a bunch of rounds through this extention. that way if it fails I will take it off and forget the scope and the hole thing. Also I do not expect exacting groupings and that is fine with me ,, however if it groups out to 6" at 50 yards I may trash the extention idea too. so I have a lot of rounds to fire just checking grouping patterns. I think it will be ok.

boy I had hoped more guys would post in with oppinions. thanks again to you that have helped so far.
Sorry for the long post but I could not explain it in 3 lines.

oh one thing I forgot. I am going to park it just before the last install and welding over the set screws. that way all I have to touch up is the set screw weld.
I just checked the drill I used for the hole up the extention and it is, .387
much larger that the bullet diameter. the bullet will travel about 4,3/4" up this hole. the hole in the brake area is drilled out with a .498 drill. the bullet will finaly travel 1,7/8" up this and out the end.
my hope is if I am not exactly aligned the bullet will still not hit the extention with the holes this large. I am still up for advise or oppinions, it is not too late to make another brake if needed or to drill out larger.

their are 4 rowes of holes, three holes in each row at the end, this way it looks a littel bit like the romak brake. the end is smoething like 3/4" diameter for the last 2"

HB,

It looks really nice! Glad to see you around again. I began to ask myself some questions about all the extensions out there after reading this thread. Anyone please chime in here. What negative effects does an extension have on a gun? It doesn't have any grooves, so does it alter the accuracy of the gun? How close does the extension's hole size need to be compared to the barrel? At what point in length does the extension really begin to effect things?

On another note, did you read my thread over in the machine shop? Hopefully I can get some pretty cool projects going soon!

I really like it, but it would really be great if you stuck on one of K-Vars new RPK bipods. It would really balance oyut the looks.
