Big 5 Sporting Goods has M44 Carbines (or the equivalent) for around $80.00.

They also have full-length rifles for about $100.00 more than that.

My question is...

I know these are military surplus and are probably about as accurate as a rifle that's been dragged behind a truck, but I have heard that some specimens are real gems in the accuracy department.

Eighty bucks is hard to beat for a "beat-around" rifle, but will I be buying something that's only accurate when you throw it? :sniper:

$80 is not too bad because no shipping and assumeing that includes an FFL transfer.. I am very happy with my M44"s , all but one is very nice and they shoot great. check it over close if it is nice and you want it I say go for it
. oh yes ,, is it laminated stock ???? if yes that is extra nice to me .

The ones I saw all had hardwood stocks. I didn't look at them up close. I didn't check the bores or anything, but I did notice that they appear to be either refurbished or in "unissued" condition. They all looked new or near new.

I literally had to leave the store because I could feel my wallet trying to jump out of my pants.

The 2 M44's I have were counter bored about 1.5 inches. After a good electric bore cleaning the one shoots 2-3 at 100 yards.

The other has had it's barrel cut back and it does 1-2 at 100 yards.

That is Czech milsurp ammo and sometimes there is a flyer in the groups.

While we're on this subject, I remember seeing an ad for genuine M91/30 sniper rifles complete with scope for (if I remember right) around $500.00.

Anybody know anything about these? I hate to drop five bills on a milsurp weapon just because it's a collectible. I might drop $300.00 for the same thing just because it would be cheaper than a Savage and it already comes with the scope.

Any info anybody? I have to pay retail...

If those are the Interordnance snipers for 500, they are fakes/reproductions. A real sniper goes for around 600-700 dollars. but if you just want one to shoot and you got the money to blow. but you would be better off saving up for and buying a real sniper. the mosin nagants can be pretty darn accurate. I have a counterbored M-38 carbine from big 5 that will shoot .308 handloads at about 1-2" spread at 100 yds, definately one of my most accurate rifles. I paid 160 for it before I got into the milsurp collecting and before I had my C&R, but I still dont regret paying as much as I did

I am not impressed with the accuracy of either of my M-44's or my type 53, but my 91/30 on the other hand is a friggin tack driver. I think I paid about $59 for it and when I got it was like new, very nice looking with super crisp rifling. I am considering getting rid of my Chinese Type 53 now that I got it back from my brother in law I see that I didn't miss it. Anybody know what a Chinese Type 53 is worth?

Go to http://7.62x54r.net/ and do your research. There are "fake" 91/30 Sniper rifles out there, so beware. Interordnance gave me a real jerk around when I went to order one of theirs. "Out of stock, will take the money now and maybe you'll get one later." That's no way to treat a dealer.

I've got a Finnish M24 Nagant, non-stepped SIG barrel. It shoot's decent for what it is. I've heard from good sources that M91/30's are good.

Speaking of Nagants....

My Dad's modified M44 shoots so well with Czech surplus it's scary. He has never gotten any commercial ammo for it yet, so who knows.

The other night he shot 125 yards 8 rounds into a 6 x10 chuck of steel he hangs from a tree. All 8 rounds were center mass and the shots were made at 8:30 PM with 58 year old eyes over open sights.

Can you say happy? It's become his favorite rifle he's ever owned as he told me the other night. Coming from him that says a lot.

He put a lot of time into tuning that little $59 rifle, but no much money.

I was in Big 5 Sporting Goods again today, looking at spotting scopes. Now they have the full length 91/30's for $79.99. They look brand new. Too bad the bolt handle isn't bent or I'd be $80.00 poorer right now.

I know, I know, there's a kit out there for not too much money that let's you cut off the bolt handle and install a bent replacement. The kit comes with a scope mount.

I'm tempted, but I just ordered a Savage 10FP-LE2 in .308. It should be here Monday.

I'll probably eventually post a thread reviewing it, but don't look for it soon. I put it on a credit card because with the way the Chinese are buying up steel right and left I was afraid to wait a couple of months and have it be $200 higher. What I'm saying is it will probably be a closet queen for at least a few weeks while I get the money for an optic.
