Has anbody tried to make a MP-44 (Sturmgewehr) "look a like" out of an AK kit? I am going to give it a try. Just cosmetecs, nothing major.
1) I will start with my favorite kit ..AMD-63.
2) Mill a metal pistol grip with wood inserts.
3) Modify a rear trunion to accept a MP-44 buttstock (Cetme wood stock will be used)
4) Make a new top cover that works with buttstock/trunion modifications.
5) Make a new lower fore grip.

Any ideas???

1. Left hand bolt mod
2. Side plates to simulate stamped receiver
3. Big ejection port
4. Ejection port cover (maybe from AR-15)
5. Left hand safety in pistol grip assembly (maybe just use parts from H&K lower)

Depending on how crazy you want to get with this, there are bead rolling tools for sheet metal available. They're not cheap, but some bodyshops have them for stiffening the aluminum interior panels used in race cars. If you're on good terms with the shop owner, they may let you play around with the bead roller. That'd be the best way to get the ribs in the side panels.

I can't wait to see what you come up with. I kick myself for not picking up an MP-44 kit 15 years ago when, if I remember right, they were around $650. I have always loved the looks of the sturmgewehr and wished someone would make a semi version. Also thanks for the links to those pic Rhino_66!!

I have been studying all the pics, but I am mainly going to do a stock/ handguard / pistol grip set to give it that look. After all....it will still be an AK!!!!! Just something fun and different. I am running out of ideas for these AMD-63s!!!!!

I want to start by milling an aluminum pistol grip that blends in with the trigger guard. I would like to use wood or bakelite panels on the aluminum grip. I already ordered a set of CETME wood from Tapco for $19.99. It is a good start for the buttstock. Lower front handguard should be easy, but I would like to move the hanguard retainer forward towards the gas tube. Gas tube would reamin as-is (uncovered).
The hardest part will be the buttstock/trunion adapter. It has to also secure the top cover. Bolt spring / cover catch would be hidden under the new cover.

The only real problem I see is getting the rear stock in a position to be able to sight properly. The MP44 rear stock is set pretty much in line while the sights are raised higher than the receiver.

I got the new Cetme wood from Tapco. I think that this may just work with a little imagination!

I think I saw a registered re-weld a while back in the 8-9k range.. Ammo would be the only problem with one of those..

I know a guy with a registered live mp-44 and one with a "wooden" receiver.
