MATTHEW MANWELLER'S COMMENTARY ON THIS ELECTION

Kirby read this op-ed Friday morning 10/15/04 on the program. The commentary is from Matthew Manweller, a political science professor at Central Washington University. Here's the text of that commentary:

"In that this will be my last comlumn before the presidential election, there will be no sarcasm, no attempts at witty repartee. The topic is too serious, and the stakes are too high.

This November we will vote in the only election during our lifetime that will truly matter. Because America is at a once-in-a-generation crossroads, more than an election hangs in the balance. Down one path lies retreat, abdication and a reign of ambivalence. Down the other lies a nation that is aware of its past and accepts the daunting obligation its future demands. If we choose poorly, the consequences will echo through the next 50 years of history. If we, in a spasm of frustration, turn out the current occupant of the White House, the message to the world and ourselves will be two-fold.

First, we will reject the notion that America can do big things. Once a nation that tamed a frontier, stood down the Nazis and stood upon the moon, we will announce to the world that bringing democracy to the Middle East is too big a task for us. But more significantly, we will signal to future presidents that as voters, we are unwilling to tackle difficult challenges, preferring caution to boldness, embracing the mediocrity that has characterized other civilizations. The defeat of President Bush will send a chilling message to future presidents who may need to make difficult, yet unpopular decisions. America has always been a nation that rises to the demands of history regardless of the decisions. America has always been a nation that rises to the demands of history regardless of the costs or appeal. If we turn away from that legacy, we turn away from who we are.

Second, we inform every terrorist organization on the globe that the lesson of Somalia was well learned. In Somalia we showed terrorists that you don't need to defeat America on the battlefield when you can defeat them in the newsroom. They learned that a wounded America can become a defeated America. Twenty-four hour news stations and daily tracing polls will do the heavy lifting, turning a cut into a fatal blow. Except that Iraq is Somalia times 10. The election of John Kerry will serve notice to every terrorist in every cave that the soft underbelly of American power is the timidity of American voters. Terrorists will know that a steady stream of grizzly photos for CNN is all you need to break the will of the American people. Our own self-doubt will take it from there. Bin Laden will recognize that he can topple any American administration without setting foot on the homeland.

It is said that America's WWII generation is its "greatest generation." But my greatest fear is that it will become known as America's "last generation." Born in the bleakness of the Great Depression and hardened in the fire of WWII, they may be the last American generation that understands the meaning of duty, honor, and sacrifice. It is difficult to admit, but I know these terms are spoken with only hollow detachment by many (but not all) in my generation. Too many citizens today mistake "living in America" as "being an American." But America has always been more of an idea than a place. When you sign on, you do more than buy real estate. You accept a set of values and responsibilities. This November, my generation, which has been absent too long, must grasp that 100 years from now historians will look back at the election of 2004 and see it as the decisive election of our century. Depending on the outcome, they will describe it as the moment America joined the ranks of ordinary nations; or they will describe it as the moment the prodigal sons and daughters of the greatest generation accepted their burden as caretakers of the City on the Hill."

Okay I'm new here so if I piss of someone TO BAD !!!
WE HAVE NO ROOM OR TOLERANCE FOR SUNNY DAY PATRIOTS ,for those of you who dont understand, it means those who shout hooray I'm a proud American when things are good, but when the chips are down the say let someone else take care of it , it would cost me too much in someway or another , but as an American a TRUE BLOODED American we owe it to each other to occasionlly sacrifice of ourself in order to maintain our freedoms we enjoy , (and are losing daily thanks to those who don't see or really care to know the truth ,so long as it doesn't interfear with their welfare checks or the Big gain in the stock market for their own benifit or advancement in social status) with that said John Kerry does NOT deserve to serve us as our President of this Nation, he is not a true Patriot if he would allow the defeat of our Constitution (any of it) by the U.N .This is not their country, they didn't bleed , sacrifice or die for it , Americans do, you and I ,our Fathers and brothers, sisters and Mothers ,so share that with anyone you know who thinks Kerry is the answer for America . Ask them if they like the right to have their own opinion just as you have yours (even if we don't like theirs or vise versa ) thats a TRUE American , Mind your own business , unless I ask for your help, let me live my life the way I want to, as long as I'm not causing you any harm ,who should care .Thats how it was intended !!!!! We will be forced to make some sort of sacrifice, but HOW ,WHAT, WHEN and most importantly BY WHO'S CHOICE , Your own or someone elses. Tell that to Kerry supporters (even if they don't think it would be that way)
Stand Tall and keep up this site , its a Great tool .AND ONCE AGAIN IF I PISSED OF A KERRY FAN or anyone else JUST BROWSING ,TO BAD,you kept reading it to this point ,so be mad at yourself for lack of discipline to turn away,no one but you forced you to keep reading on .This is still America, for today anyway. There are still Great Americans here , we just need to stand together ,to be brave in the face of our foe.Remember: God, Guts, and Guns won this country . Not Fonda Kerry.
Thanks and God Bless to MY fellow Patiots. OK I'll get off my soap box .
Thanks for letting me vent.

Amen Leatherneck!

The saying Freedom isn't free comes to mind.

Another thing comes to mind also, tolerance. I have a tolerance for the Michael Moore's and other people I consider to be Asswipes and I feel they have the right to say their lame opinions to a point. I have this because it's what I feel America is all about. However, I do not see this on the other side and that scares the crap out of me.

Where has their tolerance and observance of due process gone? Following the rules of law? It's a scary thing happening in this country and I'm starting to lose my tolerance as I think many of us on the Conservative and Moderate sides are.

God help us all on November 2nd that we have an election not fraught with violence and dissention.

SangRun you are soooo right! They (the left) preach tolerance and diversity but they sure don't believe in either, nor practice it. And the Professor hit in on the head about the message a Kerry win will send to both our friends and our enemies. And I shudder to think about who he would appoint to the Supreme Court. Can you imagine Justice Schummer?? I am voluntering at my local Republican headquarters a couple of nights a week on the phone bank and praying hard!!! And sure I have problems with Bush (his spending for one) but they are nothing when compared to the problems I have with Kerry!!!

SangRun,
I beleive you hit the nail on the head.Tolerance is one biggie though , just as a glass can hold only so much of something before it overflows and you have a MESS. Don't get me wrong, I think we should all tolerate to some point , except it seems the liberal society has pushed it down the conservatives throat (with a nice pointy fork at times)
and we all have limits reguardless of which side of the fence your on,a person still draws lines eventually (hopefully before it's to late to rectify the problem) just as I beleive you were refering to_Or better yet lets say Michael Moore could be compared to
a pimple on your butt cheek , it dosen't effect you much at first but then it slowly almost sneaky like comes to a boil and boom ,you've got a royal pain on your ass.
My point is we'll never get rid of the M.Moores ,(and if my last post did not reflect a note on tolerance outright thats why I said "live and let live" .) The question is are the
liberals willing to stop and REASON or compremise ? I would like to see that ,but I'll bet most members on this site or any other like it ,doubt that we can come to a compromise. So whats left to do ??We just keep going and fight the GOOD fight and hope for the best .Until we come to a time when Paul Revere comes riding out again, now some people will think I'm a fruitcake for saying this but I DON'T GIVE A SHIT, its the truth and sometimes the truth hurts/ scares people ,and they've gotten so good at blaming others that they don't even know what or who to blame anymore ,so people just jump on the band wagon cause it's politicly correct, and then it comes out that the person who was pointing the finger was the one responsable (for their own actions) in the first place. The Michael Moores (liberals) need to learn that sometimes your better off being quiet and observing, cause more times than you think , you realize that things weren't what you thought they were. But, hey, people are people and the truth is we'll never ALL get along together, Tolerance , Respect , Discipline and most of all accepting ones own responability for ones own actions .
Thats where we all need to be getting back too! Well, there I went and jumped on my soapbox again, damn it, I need to quit that or your all going to think I'm some kind of
Preacher or something.(Not that I have anything against preachers)HAHA, there, theres a little humor to end it with.Nuff said. Semper FI

You make good points Leatherneck and again your post set off a lightbulb.

Lastnight I was talking to my wife about someone I knew who apllies his experience to every person he ever meets. He never stops to think that people are different from himself.

He thinks people should live his and act like his family. Sometimes I think Michael Moore and the wacko left are like this.

Michael Moore is just using our own stupidity against us. He knows that there are so many out there that can?t think for them selves that he can lie in his movies and get millions to believe it. He?s also making ten?s of millions of dollars as he sells this country down the drain. A person like this doesn?t care what happens because he can always buy a life style that the rest of us will never see. He projects an image of ?The Common Man? by wearing crap clothes and having that look of having not shaved for three days, but keeping that three day beard is a lot harder than just shaving or letting it grow. And the ball cap is another item that gives the illusion of being ?Common?. It?s all part of marketing him to the public as someone they can trust, how many times have you heard ?He?s just a regular guy? when people talk about him or his movies? Yah just a regular multimillionaire that you see every day at work right? I?ve never worked next to a multimillionaire have you? He?s a leftist moviemaker just like so many others; he just has a different look.

Valid points all.

This is going to be a close one, We are going to need every vote we can get.

I work on it everyday. I think I may have even gotten through to a few, but it's really tough right here in Kerry's back yard.
Many of the morons here in MA are still in love with old Teddy too, and they know He and Kerry are joined at the hip.
