The Romanians used manganese phosphate, at least that's the easiest phosphate that gives the charcoal black color my Romanian kits parts have. Definitely phosphated (Parkerized).

Bake it in cosmoline, then store it in unconditioned warehousing for 20 years?

That's one place where you have to use imagination and a bit of artistic talent.

Easier would be to use Caswell's Blacking to bring those old parts back to a near-new black, and use it on the receiver to match. Note that different steel alloys take park differently, and it's not unusual for a brand new parked firearm to have mismatched colors because of this.

That's why some end up painting. Covers all the sins.

thanks for the advice.I have been painting mine with dura coat.That's a nice finish but I wanted one that had the original "look"Well here it's 5:25 off to work at the prison.

Only problem with duplicolor is that it has more of a tendency to chip than some of the other types of paints. I've got several chips on my duplicolored galil just from handling in the safe.

that's brass residue from the brass brush. it will come off with hoppe's or shooter's choice.
