Is anyone going to buy any of the Suomi 31 kits and drum mags from Centerfire? At $49.95 for a kit and $25.00 for a drum, they seem hard to pass up. I ordered 2 kits.

How were they demilled? Is the kit an actual parts kit, or was the whole thing torched per newer BATFE guidelines?

Suomi receivers for 30$ and 10$ shipping. Of course there 80% or less.

Does anyone know anything about this SMG. And if you where to build this parts kit back into a working firearm would you need a class 2 or 3 even for a semi auto receiver.

This could be a cheap, fun toy.

OK, you've got my interest. I've done some searches but I can't find any info on putting these together. The barrel is only 12" so wouldn't we need some sort of barrel extender?

Either a barrel extender or a longer barrel (like the 19" uzi barrels that were used with the semiauto sten kits). Or there is always the possibility of a sbr or going with no stock and making a pistol out of it. ( it would be an ugly pistol though). I think the 9mm ak conversion would be a neat idea for the barrels also.

Careful there guys, If you look around here on gunco you?ll find a post on how this ?Southern Trading? place is a rip-off. It seems most think they don?t have the items in stock and only order the stuff after they get enough suckers on the hook. They talk about waiting 6 months for shipment or even never getting it at all. So buyer beware.

Suomi SMGs fire from open bolt. So unless you'e a class 2 manufacturer, you can't legally build one with the receiver sections offered.

If you make a new receiver that won't accept the original bolt, design a closed bolt firing system, and increase the barrel length to 16", you can make one work. It was possible for the Sten to be made into a legal semi-auto, so it should be possible for the Suomi. It'll just take a lot of work.

I'm mainly interested in the magwell. A drum fed, 9mm, 1/8" weld-pac AK would be way too cool.

This is my plan and that is why I ordered two.....just in case I screw up.

Ack, sounds like a lot of work to get the M31 to shoot semi auto., I like the idea of using the parts for a 9mm AK. That sounds awesome. I just happen to have recieved a matching 5.45 bolt/carrier and trunnion that can be used for a project like this, but I'll have to wait until I read a lot more. My 5.45 stuff was to go to a possible AK-105 project,. but the 9mm sounds really cool too.

I'm sure you are all aware of the efforts to make a semi-auto PPSH firing from a closed bolt. I think it was called the SR-41 or something like that. I don't think they every got them worked out correctly and the extended barrel was ugly. There would be a great deal of work to make this operate on a closed bolt. I think if I was to build one, it would make a cool $50 wall hanger.

The barrel and barrel jacket are supposed to be quick removable on this one, which would make it different than the PPSH. As long as these jackets were not cut, this would make this one easier than a PPSH so make into a dummy gun no? I'm looking forward to pictures on this one.

If you are using the mag well, this is part of the receiver, no? So, would you be using part of a machine gun receiver with your AK get you in trouble?

Sorry I know this is a legal question, But Im still trying to learn all this.

So If I was to have a class III C&R could I piece one together.

No more than using the receiver stub from a milled AK receiver as a trunnion.

Listed mods it took to convert the PPSH to semi-Auto approved config on the SR-41

The PPSh41 fires from an open bolt, the SR-41 from a closed bolt.
The PPSh41 used a fixed firing pin in the boltface. The SR-41 has a spring loaded rebounding firing pin that extends through a tunnel bored longitudinally through the bolt.
The SR-41 uses a conventional sear/hammer arrangement much like the semiautomatic AK variants instead of the bolt retaining sear mechanism of the PPSh41.
The SR-41 has a smoothbore tube welded to the original PPSh41 barrel to extend its overall length to the legal minimum sixteen inches. This tube extends beyond the barrel jacket.
The PPSh41's selector switch has been converted to a trigger locking safety on the SR-41.
The barrel on the SR-41 cannot be removed from the upper receiver.

Yeah I'm going to use the barrel for a 9mm conversion too. In fact I'm working real hard on a helical drum design for the Bizon look. I think I can make it work. Basing the design not on the Calico helical drum but rather on an auger movement, like those grain feeder thingys you see on a farm. Or like in a meat grinder. And I think I can do it on the mini mill! :D

Anyone know what the Suomi barrel journal measures?
