I'm thinking about building a G3 from one of the parts kits available at FAC and was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of work is involved compared to AK's? I guess I'm mainly concerned with welding, because I have absolutely no welding experience. Thanks!

I've also been looking into this. Does anyone know anything about the Century parts kits that are available too? What is a decent price to pay for a kit?

Grimes, as far as I know, a FAL isn't horrible to build. There is some really good literature out there on this topic too, especially on some of the sites. I think one of the hardest parts is removing the barrel stub and timing the barrel.

According to the following post over at Gunboards.com, you don't need to weld anything if you get the JLD receiver with the trunion already installed. All you need is a press.

I'm very tempted to get one of these kits and build a G3 folder. I haven't even built my AK-74 yet.

Whaaaatt? No welding? Rock on G3 here we come baby!!! He heeee!!

Thanks again for the link!! I got in on three group buys, G3 parts kit, US Followers and mag baseplates, and wide green fore-arm/ bipod combo. All pretty cheap.

Everyone should own at least one MBR.

Only thing I don't like about my preban G3 is that HK parts are EXPENSIVE. That, and every HK owner on the HK boards thinks that God endowed German engineers with something special that he didn't share with anyone else. So if you want to trick it out, you have two options - expensive HK stuff or cheap aftermarket stuff. Heck the G3 forend bipod was $50!!! Don't even mention the folding stocks! The aftermarket stuff doesn't really float my boat. Then again I'm collecting, not really playing, with my G3.

Here's one of the best sources for G3 parts like the carry handle, stocks, etc:

Cheapest HK forend bipod anywhere (POF):

Any questions about the G3 just ask. Like how hard it is to clean the chamber thanks to the receiver design, or how uncomfortable it is when you cheekbone is whacked by the collapsible stock when extended! ;)

It is fun to open up with it at the range. 20 round mags are really all you want to put your shoulder through, trust me!

Keep in mind too that many of the G3 parts kits are very old and have seen use, so the headspace may need adjustment. Be sure to properly headspace it no matter what you do. 7.62x51 is too big a round to eyeball the headspacing.

So, what do you think, should I build up the G3 with the stock barrel or go for that 24" bull barrel on SARCO's website? I like the idea of a long range gun.

This one?

If you want a cheap MSG-90 clone then you could go with the longer barrel.

Oh and don't believe the hype about needing their special $25-$40 rear sight adjustment tool. Make a donor tool from an old or cheap pair of needlenose pliers that will engage the retainer and allow for sight adjustments. ;)

Do you think I would honestly get tha much more range and accuracy out of the 24" heavy barrel over JLD's 18" heavy barrel?

"Yes" but to what extent I cannot say. You'll get a bit more by accurizing the crap out of the rifle:

- You can't free-float the barrel, but like was mentioned on the other thread, you could bed the handguard.
- Get a receiver-mounted bipod or the HK heavy bipod (runs $400 *IF* you can find one - I did :D).
- Put a good scope mount on it and a good scope.
- Use match-grade .308 ammo. (although cheap surplus .308 ammo doesn't do half bad).
- Full buttstock (there are MSG adjustable buttstocks for better cheek weld).
- You could go all-out and put a match trigger set on it like for the PSG sniper model
- Perhaps leave off the muzzle brake
- Put a target crown on it (if it does not already have one).
- Cryo-treat the barrel.

Better Range? Most likely - 6 inches extra barrel = 6 inches more time for the gases to accelerate the bullet, resulting in greater velocity and therefore greater range, and (arguably) greater accuracy.

Cool, thanks Pookie!! Can you guess at the effective range after most of that work? I'd probably stick with the regular bipod, but probably do everything else.

Man I wouldn't even want to guess. The PSG-1 has all the bells and whistles, and it could probably go to 1,000 yards. The G3 drum sight goes from 1-4, so its effective range is out to 400 yards/meters. I would guess somewhere in-between... perhaps 700 yards? I don't know the ballistics of the 308 round so I just can't say.

Here's a few comparisons:

http://www.remtek.com/arms/hk/mil/psg1/psg1.htm

http://www.world.guns.ru/sniper/sn27-e.htm

http://www.remtek.com/arms/hk/mil/msg90/msg90.htm

They all say sub-1MOA accuracy. 600 yds scope on the PSG-1, 1200 on the MSG-90. Makes sense due to their respective roles. SO... with that barrel, I'd say if it can get sub-1MOA accuracy, it is a matter of how well you shoot. The 308 is a heavy bullet so you'd think it would fare well at the longer ranges. Obviously most all good Western sniper rifles use this caliber...

All I can say is WOW. Thanks for the links. I love the MSG90A1, I think thats what I'd like to clone. This one might take a while, but at least I'm already on the group buys for the basic FMP kit and wide forearm/ bipod combo.
What a beauty:

Found the buttstock, US made to be sold by Top-Notch Parts? Are these guys OK? I get suspicious of "pre-orders" after hearing about Special Weapons and JoeKen. Anyway here it is:

Special Weapons *is* Top-Notch Parts. Same people associated with "Todd".

FWIW, You either love him or hate him.

Personally I don't care - I don't want to be his friend, I just want to buy his product! I've ordered some parts for my friend's MK-760 and didn't have any problems whatsoever. I've never ordered any of the G36 conversion stuff, or the UMP conversion stuff. I'd sure like to, but I'll wait for version 2.

You can read comments about the company at the ORF website, hkpro.com, hk-54.com (think that's his site), among other places.

Does Tapco have anything like that?

YMMV.

Thats the only place I know to get one of these buttstocks at all.
I was afraid they might have been associated with Todd. I may just take my chances.

Isn't HKpro Todd's board? I checked out that Sturmgerwehr board and found a 50 round G3 drum!!!

Too bad I don't have a GRAND to drop on it, lol.
