I was organizing my parts for this build to see if I was missing anything (that I didn't know about) and it occured to me to take a pic and post it for you guys. I'm still missing RPK handguards (on their way), OOW receiver (on its way), and a few small parts from KVAR (will be on their way).

Yep hammer spring and recoil spring assembly didn't make it in the shot but I have em. Front Trunnion is going to be a Romanian 23 mm 5.45, it's one of the "small parts from KVAR". My smith asked for it since my bolt is Romanian.

Cephus, forearm? The hanguards are coming very soon.

Not one gas tube I tried out of:
SAR-2
AK-74
Soviet RPK-47
Bulgy RPK-74

None of them fit unless you modded them. Bulgy AK-74 from a kit was pretty close but you would have to modify it. I ended up modding the Soviet RPK-47 gas tube and pushing the rear sight block back a bit. Then had to modify the top cover for that to fit. If you are sending yours out be sure to let us know what the smith had to do, if he'll tell you. Looks like it's going to be sweet Taipan.

I also bumped back the sight block a bit and still had to fit the gas tube. As for the 23mm K-Var trunion, It almost seems like a rough forging to me. I ruined a Xebec press block pressing the barrel in mine. Be sure to check the bore of the trunion for "roundness and hone it a little with a brake hone. The small ramp that starts the bolt rotating needed a lot of fitting also. The sight/sight block will definately need work. My RPK is together, but I never finished it. Still needs everything pinned and painted.

This baby is going to go to Coyote Gulch Armory in WA. I decided to just go ahead and build it up on a OOW 5.45 reciever. Why? I found out that the Bulgarians don't make the RPK74 in an underfolder, just the 5.56 and 7.62. So my sense that it was going to be authentic on a milled reciever was blown. Then there was the cost. I'm saving something like 50% by doing it this way. That 50% savings will allow me to start another build.

SKS I found someone with RPK laminate handguards through one of the for sale boards, they should be here today or tomarrow.

No I pieced this baby together. The RSA shepards crook replacement is a piece I got from Blackjack. I'm going to try to send all of this stuff out to the gunsmith tomarrow as my OOW recievers came in last night. All of my other parts have come in since I took the above pic.

Why doesn't the gas tubes fit the barrel? What is the differance from the standard AK gas tubes?

Yep its a KVAR RPK74 assembly, and the gas block is set too far back or something. This seems to be the case with all the RPK74 assemblies that KVAR sold.
