Porting a pistol slide

Has anyone done so?

I'm looking at all these aftermarket pistol porting / slide lightening cuts and thinking "I could do that".

My HK USP slide is HEAVY! That teutonic black forest metal must be heavier than normal metal foudn on mere mortal pistols :) I'm looking at ways to reduce this so-called "carry" weight and thinking that the slide is begging for that extra metal to be removed. Seems all you need to do is tilt the mill head 45 degrees, mill cut perhaps 1" on both sides. Then drill a row of perpendicular holes in the cuts. Presto a slight weight reduction and it would no doubt improve the resale value of the pistol.

However I may just sell the stupid thing as I really am turned off by the overall quality of this HK product. Just don't see the reason it is so much more money than similar products other than the HK name.

It costs so much more because you suck and HK hates you. I swear, HK is like the Dominatrix from the Beerfest movie and there ain't no safe word.

ANY aftermarket mods will reduce the value to most potential buyers. The "Cult of HK" is spreading. IGF has a blurb on their website, basically saying they make decent high quality HK clones from parts kits. If you are the type who has built a shrine in your den for the genuine HK91 you bought in NIB condition (and never fired) and send a Christmas Card every year to the worker who did the final inspection and packing of your rifle, neither you nor IGF will be happy if you send your kit to him.
its a lot about the name. Does HK really but that much more time and effort developing there product??

Ah so true! I'm going to have to add that Safe Word comment to my anti-HK rhetoric - that's rich!!!!

I need to find that rant blog again because it was such a refreshing read :)

Hi, I'm Pookie and I'm a disheartened HK owner (Hi, Pookie...)

After owning my G3, my SL8-to-G36 conversion, and my USP pistol, I must say probably WON'T buy another HK again. I sold the G36 conversion when I moved, can't sell my G3 because of the PTR, and the USP sits in a special place to thwart home invasions. Unless I get a bug to buy the .223 version of the G3 I am no longer that enraptured with teutonic steel.
I have a G3 built from a kit and an SW receiver. Used to buy the kits for $100 and sell the pieces on Ebay back in the day. I kept the best parts to make a complete gun and a set of spares, used a little of the profits to buy the receiver. I figure Ebayers payed me a few hundred bucks to build myself a free rifle. That and the Tapco $1 steel mags in the 50 packs have me set for the G3. Now if only Aussie ammo could still be had for 12 cents a round... :bawling:
Don't try it yourself you will screw up a good barrel and be mad for doing it. magnaport is who we use easier to send it to the people who do it for a living. it is almost impossible to drill a hardened steel barrel @ an angle and be dead on. if it isn't dead on the money you wont hit the side of a barn standing 2 feet in front of it. Backyard gunsmiths are dangerous people.
I've seen ported slides crack before. That kind of put me off of them.
Hey hcpookie you sound like a GLOCK person. oh this HK is to heavy. then by a ROCK oh sorry glock. Hk purposely puts a squid in the barrel and shoots it out in their tests.......... that's right I said SHOOTS IT OUT. and the dam pistol still SHOOTS 2.75" GROUPS. (If you don't believe me look for yourself it is on HK's website) try that with any of the lighter sissy guns. you have to no be a sissy to carry an HK. if you want to wine get a glock. I have been carring an HK USP40 FS ver. 3 for seven 7 years. only sissies wine.
AHH I found it - HK Hates Me! :D

HK. Because you suck. And we hate you. Monster Hunter Nation

Interesting, that's good to know! I probably won't do this, too much trouble since the gun typically sits in a strategic location in my house for home defense purposes... I'd take a different one with me anyway for CC if ever I get my CCW permit.

Don't worry chief, I certainly would not use a drill when I have my milling machine. I'm certainly not some "dangerous" gunsmith with a dremel. I think you've mistaken me for some other jackass.

But what if I don't want a squid launching handgun? That doesn't sound like it would be very effective against anything but the Japanese, but that's only because they would seem to have a thing for tentacles...
I don't know, a squid launcher could have tactical applications! :D
Squid squid, or Navy squid?
