Here's another thread with some good info:

The air hammer method is what everyone used before plinker's rivet jig. There's a package deal with a video & an air hammer buck suited just for this purpose, check around the forums and you'll find the sale ad.

Just be careful if you choose to air hammer - you are already aware of the potential for damage to the receiver, which is what to avoid. Other than that you should be OK

I saw your bolt cutter riveter and I am interested in that design as well. My concern was that it may not reach into the rear portion of the front trunnion.
Also, can the blade be ground flat enough to mushroom the rivet without damaging it?

David
You could do them all with two sets - I had to create a second set due to the shape of the trunion near the rear rivets (not the lower ones). SO... 2 sets = $60. I'm not really sure if you could do all of them with one set. I stopped grinding when the one set fit the front rivets, and didn't want to press my luck. If I had more time/money I'd probably grind another set down to get it "just right", but it works for me as-is.

The blade actually didn't damage the rivet, it damaged the bucking plate I was using to protect the rivet head - 1/4" steel plate with a concave dremeled into it for the rivet head.

The only time I had problem with the blade damaging this bucking plate was when I didn't grind the blade all the way flat... there was still enough taper on the blade to make it act like a dull knife. It did not damage the bucking plate when I ground the cutting edge completely off of the blade.

24" cutters. The $15 ones from Harbor Freight. I used 2 sets - $30 total. Actually bought the one set from their sidewalk sale - $10!!!!

12" *may* be too small - I wonder what kind of leverage you can get out that?
