I'm sure many of you have read this on other boards, so I'll be brief.
A lot of Russian SKS's came either from the factory or the restoration depot without the little flat spring for the safety. When you move your safety on and off, it should make a definite "click" each way and require your finger to overcome the spring tension to move it. If it makes one smooth motion without any resistance other than a tight fit, then it is one of those shipped without a safety spring, and you should install the spring as soon as possible. Most of the Russian SKS's shipped without the safety spring rely on a tight fit to hold the safety in position, but as the parts wear, the safety latch begins to "drift" out of position.
Believe me; my friends and I found this out through experience!
