WASHINGTON - A gun bill is expected to be introduced in the Senate that would overturn many of the District's tough gun laws.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) are expected to introduce the Second Amendment Enforcement Act Tuesday.
The bill would repeal the District's ban on semi-automatic weapons and remove the requirement that guns be kept unloaded and disassembled when stored in the home or office.
It would also authorize District residents to buy guns and ammunition in Maryland and Virginia, and it would repeal registration requirements.
An email obtained by WTOP was sent to members of the Senate from Tester's office seeking co-sponsors.
"The Second Amendment Enforcement Act finally secures for District residents the rights reinforced by the Supreme Court's decision in the District of Columbia v. Heller."
Many of the changes in the Tester/McCain bill are the same as amendments that were attached to the D.C. Voting Rights Bill. Those amendments were characterized as "egregious" by the District's non-voting Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and the reason she had the Voting Rights Bill pulled at the last minute. The bill does not open the door to open or concealed carry permits.
