A lot of times they will use a synonym of the original translated word to keep the rhyme in place. Don't know if that is the case on Silent Night, just an educated guess.

STILLE NACHT, HEILIGE NACHTSILENT NIGHT, HOLY NIGHT Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Alles schl?ft, einsam wacht
Nur das traute, hochheilige Paar,
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh'!
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh'! Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Hirten erst kund gemacht
T?nt es laut von fern und nah:
Durch der Engel Halleluja
"Christ, der Retter, ist da!"
"Christ, der Retter, ist da!"

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht
Lieb' aus deinem g?ttlichen Mund,
Da uns schl?gt die rettende Stund'.
Christ, in Deiner Geburt!
Christ, in Deiner Geburt!

Three further stanzas of the German text.

Silent night, Holy night,
All is calm, all is bright,
'Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, Holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heav'nly hosts sing Alleluia;
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born.

Silent night, Holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.
