Hello

I'm new to Ak building and got a few questions. Ive been doing a lot of research and thought I read somewhere that I dont need a barrel press if I'm doing a screw build, is that right? Having to press the barrel sounds like something I dont want to do. And I hear some kits require it and some dont? Would the centerfire AMD 63 kit be a good one to start off with? I am going to finish a bent blank for the receiver.

Thanks

Hi Jason. an amd 63 kit is a good first project as the rifle comes with the barrel still attached to the trunion and if all numbers of the kit match, a real good chance that it will be properly headspaced, but it should be checked out before firing anyway. If you are doing a screw build you can grind the rivets in the trunion flush with the trunion, center punch and drill the rivets out, starting with a small bit and finishing up with a number 29 bit which is the proper drill for tapping for 10/32 screws. You must be careful to only drill about 3/16 into the trunion so you do not drill into the barrel. Then tap the holes with a 10/32 tap starting out with a regular tap and finishing with a bottoming tap. It really isn't that hard if you have a drill press as you can set the depth of the hole so you don't drill too deep and into the barrel. I hope this helps. Maybe another member can explain it better than I have. ak'sr4me
