I read a book called "Company C", about an Oklahoma National Guard armor unit sent to Iraq in 1991. They were staged out of Saudi Arabia.
They'd been there several weeks waiting for the big advance, when maintenance crews showed up and started painting out the small American flags on the turrets. Someone up the command chain had decided they were "offensive" to the Saudis, and so had to be covered.
The tankers were angry, and a few found some small flags at the BX and tied them to the aerials despite the orders.
