After ruining my first flat, I am ready to make a real bending jig. My FFL dealer shut down shop and I really don't feel like finding another to purchase receivers through.

I am doing two (Ace) bentmetal receivers now. They are coming out real nice. $15.00 flats and rails just seem too good to pass up!! I also want to be able to say that I made a jig that can bend flats. It is all part of this cool hobby. One can never have too many toys...I mean tools!

yosuthnmasa,

looks like you came in at $17.44 delivered per flat.

gtbehary,

what is your flat bending jig like?
Although it is only on the drawing board, it is going to be oposite of all the others out there.
It will be a universal flat plate (jig) that is drilled and tapped to hold the flat in place over an open pocket at the different points of bending. A solid ram will be pushed through the pocket to bend the flat. It will only need three pieces (plus fasteners). The plate, the ram and the hold down piece. Of course there will be various alignment pins and bolting.
Step 1) bend top rail #1
Step 2) bend bottom fold #1
reverse flat on plate.
Step 3) bend top rail #2
Step 4) bend bottom fold #2
Over simplified but that is the process. Each bend will require the alignment of the flat using correct alignment position and clamping down with the hold down plate. This would require loosening and tightening some hefty bolts.
If the hold down plate gets too complicated for the use of all four bends, I may have to make one for the top folds and one for the bottom folds.
Since only one bend is being performed at once, I believe that the process can be accomplished with a big hammer instead of a press, but a press would be the prefered method.

Hotbarrel,

I don't get the joke, I know I'm not the brightest bulb in the box but if Tapco is doing their power buy at $15 + $5 shipping that $20. yosuthnmasa getting in at $17.44 for the flats and shipping looks to me that although he didn't steal them he did get a good price.

Help me see what I'm missing.

Scott

So the shipping for one flat is $5. On one flat, yes you wouldn't do very good. But what if you ordered quite a few like 5 or 6 like I did? So we ordered ours last Friday, and just this week they are offering them for so much cheaper. We also went through Tapco didn't we DPH? Wonder if they will give us the deal they are giving everyone this week. It was only a difference of one business day right? This all pends on the idea that they wouldn't charge you $5 for shipping on each one. If they combine shipping then I think we would come out better.

I know we can't gaze into a crystal ball and know when all these great deals are going to be coming out. But, it being only one business day later (after we placed the order) begins to make me wonder why we couldnt get a similar price line.

I don't know if I fully understand either DPH. It is a bit funny though, when you see all these group buys go through at a certain price, and then Tapco turns right around and offers the items for cheaper than what we were going to get them for through the group buy. And, it always tends to be right about the time we are ready to place the group buy or it just ended. Maybe this is what he is referring to. Lets think back here on this one....

The GB where if we spent over $50 at Tapco, they would give us a 15 or 25% discount on their "smaller" items. That one ended up being a wash for various reasons, but ultimately because Tapco was going to offer most of the items at an even lower price than what we were going to get them for.

Then you had the $59.99 AMD kits. I don't think there was a group buy here on them, but Im sure there were other people who were in GB's at other boards that bought them for much more than that and then this kick ass deal came out.

Now we've got the Flat GB, that just finished and now they're on sale for $15 and you can order them directly from Tapco and not wait. This group buy was actually pretty cool because it didn't last very long, thus we wouldn't have to wait long either.

I guess if you take a step back it is pretty funny how we do all these damn group buys and then 2 weeks afterwards, Tapco cuts the prices enormously and gives an even better deal. If you don't take a step back, it can piss you off a little knowing that you could've just waited and got them for cheaper and faster. But like I said, we can't gaze into crystal balls and see this coming.

Now that I think about it, we might be able to sovle the problem with the flats. If I buy something from a clothing department or Target, they generally do a price adjustment. In the case of these, Tapco has a 30 money back guarantee. Return the flats, and then rebuy them at the cheaper price. Most places will work with you though and go ahead and give you the discount to avoid the hassle of shipping them all back and reshipping them. Maybe this can all be avoided through a simple phone call though.

you got it GTBEHARY and yosothernmasa
when you add ALL the extra stuff up it is a much sweeter deal. how much is a tapco rivet set worth?? now do not forget a buck or two for the center post. It just seems to me that this adds up to a MUCH better deal direct, without any group buy at all. so if just the flat and rails is ONLY a couple bucks less than EVERYTHING it seems to me someone made something off the guy in the group buy. Or something dose not add up rite. I like to call it a web page tax ,, but I allready realize not everyone "gets" me. shit I have had to live with me most all of my life and sometimes I done get it . HAHAHAhahaaa just light funny no harm intended..please NOBODY TAKE THIS JOKE AS ME SAYING THAT ANYONE AT GUNCO IS TAKEING ANYTHING IN ANY FORM FROM ANY GB ON THIS BOARD. as pointed out above their have been a lot of times that after the GB the price falls. My AMD 65 at $59 was at least as nice as ones sold by another board for a lot more cash. Again I know that the administrators HERE DO NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MEMBERS. It just seems like something is funny when you can buy direct cheaper than in a group buy. any the implication is that SOME OTHER web pages may be profiting from the members buying power.

Considering what I paid for my first flat and rails, both (Power Buy and Group Buy)deals are a bargain. I always appreciate it when someone sets up a Group Buy. I believe that a group buy is a bit of a hassle for Tapco, so the Power Buys that they offer is easier for them in the long run.
