OK, here's the progress I've made on my AMD-63. I started with an ACE receiver and have cut and drilled all the holes. I am almost nervous to get excited because I'm afraid I've done something wrong or will screw something up. I couldn't have gotten this far without all you guys!

I did use machman's dimple jig. The version I received works great, but is a little hard to line up the "male" piece on the top of the receiver. The male piece is actually a little wider than all of the rest of the pieces. I bought a 150lb strength magnet from Harbor Freight and used it to slightly hold the pieces while I lined them all up. Then I eyeballed the male piece the best I could. I'm thinking about maybe shaving off the extra material so that it matches the size of the other ones. The trunnion holes were very easy! Take a look at this thread from Sangrun Hunter:
http://www.gunco.net/forums/showthread.php?t=787
Basically, I got like a 2 1/2'' drill press vice and clamped it down to the drill press table and then tightened the edge of the trunnion in the vice. Then I positioned everything so that I could move the drill bit through the hole. Slide the receiver back over the trunnion which is still clamped in the vice and you'll drill your holes perfectly. Sangrun Hunter explains it a little better and has pictures. Make sure and use a small drill bit!

amd 65 build

Here's a couple of pics of my first build, a amd 65. I built the receiver from scratch using 3/16 hot rolled steel and welded it up with a mig welder. I had to make my own fcg pins because the reciver is so much thicker than the stock one. I used , beleive it or not, a cleaning rod from an ak to make the pins. I hardened every thing by heating with a map torch to cherry re and quencing it in motor oil. Then I baked it in an oven at 500 degrees for an hour and then let cool. It turned out looking just like the hardened lower rails I bought. I have fired 2000 rounds through it so far without a misfire or jam. I must admit, though, I spent more money making my receiver than it would have cost to buy a couple of complete receivers from oow or joeken or globel trades. Sounds like alot of fun to me! I've got a borrowed MIG as we speak now. I would love to do something like this while I've got it. What were the settings you used on the MIG and what size and kind of wire did you use. Also, did you have to use gas? Please explain in a very simple way....I am very new to welding.

I have a 85 amp flux core wire feed mig welder that I bought for about 170 dollars. I use flux core wire .035 and it does not require gas. Im not the greatest welder in the world by anymeans. I just welded and an grinded until I got it right. I had the setting on the mig on high because of the thickness of the metal I used. I see my pictures didn't load right. I will try again.

I welded up a hole that I had misdrilled in my receiver yesterday. I used solid wire with no gas. I found that it didn't work to well. It would pop alot and I couldn't get it to puddle up well. I think the voltage wasn't set high enough. I may give it ago again here soon. I sure would like to do a welded receiver. Would love to see the pictures too!

For some reason, I can't get my pictures to load. When I upload them I have to wait about 5 minutes and then a Can't find site screen comes up and it says that it has timed out. I don't know what is going on. Set the heat higher on the welder and try speeding up the wire feed. Are you sure you are usinf flux core wire? Ak'sr4me

No, I'm not using flux core. I'm using solid wire with no gas. This is probably why I'm having problems. I think if I try it again I'll go with the flux core and turn up the voltage.

If you are not using argon gas, you must use flux core wire. Even that is a liitle tricky. If I had it to do over again, I would have spent another 150 dollars and got a mig wth gas. I had one before and any novice can get good welds, when using gas. The flow is so much smoother. Plus you can weld 4130, stainless steel and I even had good luck welding cast iron. ak'sr4me

Sure you did! you knew I was going to see this thread and wonder why you were pushing TIG so hard! If you guys could only see the weld that HB made on my bucking bar...ohh wait I think there is still a picture uploaded here somewhere....Actually, the weld you made wasn't bad at all. If you guys could have only seen what kind of damage I made on this #43 hole in my receiever trying to weld it up with a MIG with no gas and no flux. It was horrible! I actually had to take the dremel with a light grinder and grind down all of the pops of weld on the entire receiver side. But, I did get it filled! I may try some of the flux. I just wish I could hold onto my buddies welder for a while longer.
