Hmong Hunter Pleads Innocent in Wisconsin Slayings

Dec 29, 12:39 PM (ET)

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A Laotian immigrant pleaded not guilty on Wednesday in a Wisconsin court to charges he murdered six hunters and attempted to murder two others, court officials said.

Defendant Chai Soua Vang, 36, entered the not guilty plea in Sawyer County Court and waived his right to a preliminary hearing, so no witnesses to support the charges were called, the court clerk's office said.

Vang, a father of 10 and an experienced hunter, has told authorities he was fired on first in the Nov. 21 confrontation with other hunters who he said hurled racial epithets at him after he got lost and wandered onto private land in Wisconsin's North Woods.

Two hunters who were wounded in the incident have said Vang, a truck driver and former sharpshooter in the California National Guard, fired first after being told to leave a deer-hunting stand on private land.

He is a member of the large Hmong immigrant community in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota, part of the roughly 300,000 Hmong who have resettled in the United States since the Vietnam war. The rural hill people faced persecution in their native Laos after being recruited by the CIA to fight the then-North Vietnamese.

Well, a bit of semantic hair-splitting here, Preacher. Despite the heading of this thread, he plead not guilty, not innocent. Difference being that the plea isn't that he didn't do it - the plea is that he's not going to cop to it and they're gonna have to prove it. That's fair. Unless they offered him a good plea bargain, he'd have been a fool to enter any other plea.

His story is pretty weak, though: I don't know how you'd make a case that you blew six people away and wounded two others in self-defense. Those eight hunters must have been some badass boys, because with your run-of-the-mill group of eight hunters once you kill one or two the rest try to run away and you're no longer in a self-defense situation.

At least that's been my experience when I've opened up on groups of eight hunters.

I guess I just get aggrivated at these types, because it's them that give gun owners a bad name. I realize that it was the smart thing foor him to do legally.

BTW: Congrats on Post # 1000

Not guilty was to be expected, as was waiving the preliminary.

His plea leaves the door open for the ever popular "not guilty by reason of insanity" plea.

The defense is expected to first try for a change of venue, ideally from Madison, Dane County (Liberal Socialist Bleeding Heart ecofreak Capitol of the U.S), next would be any county with no Hmong, lastly would be a County with lots of Hmong, and try to get 2 or 3 on the jury.

Barring that, the defense will try to get an imported jury from one of the aformentioned areas.

Defense will probably be some amalgam of self-defense, cultural shock and temporary insanity, brought on by his fear of the dreaded evil white people.

The only thing that will keep this from being the shortest trial in history is that our oh-so-caring Liberal Socialist ... excuse me Democrat Governor has stepped in and taken over the case. That means our very own Alcoholic Attorney General (but loyal party toadie) will personally take over the prosecution.

And, only God in his infinite wisdom can foretell what the outcome of that clusterf__k will be!

As far as Vang is concerned ... who cares, If Vang ever gets out someone will be waiting, and i'd give him about the same duration as Jeff Dahmmer, once he hits General Population in the slam.

My heart goes out to the good Hmong people in this State. They'll be paying for this one for a very long time.

No information at all about the other two people that were supposedly with him earlier. Somebody knows that story, but they aren't talking, yet at least.

The people Vang murdered were well known and well liked in that part of the state, with a lot of relatives.

People in Sawyer and Barron Counties are still a mite upset, this would not be a good year for any winter sports enthusiasts of Asian extraction to visit that part of the state.

Governor Doyle is acting like an idiot to involve his office in this, but then many of us knew he was an arrogant, corrupt party hack before the election, so his being stupid shouldn't really come as a surprise. The candidate the Republicans put up against him really was an idiot, and it showed, that's why Doyle won. (Well that and a huge amount of cash from the Indian Casinos.)

Other than that, no news from wisconsin.

Thanks for the local perspective, 5KNIVES. How is the gov meddling?

Hey, if he really wants to meddle, he can just let the case proceed however it may - and then pardon Vang if he's convicted.

Well, isn't he allowed to plead not guilty? Despite of how the media and all of us have already convicted him, he can plead whatever he wants. That doesn't mean he will get off.

Hey 5knives, any more been said about the killings that took place a few years back and a witness reported seeing a Nissan truck in the area that matched the description for Vang's truck?

Ooops, I wasn't very clear was I?

Sorry about that!

The Governors meddling was in stepping in and taking the case away from the county.

He should have let the County handle it, but he has the Politicans inability to pass up free TV "face" time.

Whatever and however this turns out, there are going to be a lot of angry citizen's here.

The Gov was our former Atty. General. widely known for his refusal to prosecute the Hmong poachers, game law violators and trespassers under the existing State Laws.

Most of the "Country people" detest him. but the same vote fraud in the cities that gave Kerry the State, got Doyle into Office, and the Repub. opposition really was a buffoon.

The Indian Casinos poured many millions into his campaign fund, and he tried to pay them back by granting virtually eternal operational gurantees to the Casinos, at ridiculusy low tax and fee rates, less than any other state, by a lot.

Then there were just enough Republicans in the State House to block that (it's still in the courts). So the Indians are mad at him.

So far he's been unable to get through the pay raises, increased pensions and lower insurance rates he promised the teachers Unions so the Teachers are mad at him!

Same for the state employees unions.

About the only backing he has left are the gay/lesbian lobby, the regular party organization and the trial lawyers.

Because of total mis-management and special interest politics, the States Deer Herd is out of control, incrediblt over populated and diseased (CWD) , the revenue from hunting (a big deal here) is plummetting. (300,000 fewer hunters here this year than 2 years ago.

Deer/car damage alone was over 2 billion last year!

And there are rumours around that the Feds are looking into several areas, including the last couple of elections, and campaign financing.

The Gov. needs this particular hot potato about like a drownding man needs an anvil.

The current Attorney General is expected to botch this case up untill it makes O.J's trial look like a model of jurisprudence excellence.

She wrecked 3 state vehicles driving from the Capitol to her home, (while billing the State for the mileage) and was under the influence all 3 times, that's all in her first year in Office. Third time she got nailed with a DUI (no more courtesy passes) and got off with less than a slap on the wrist.

This trial could look a lot like a Marx brothers comedy.

Good question Preacher!

A lot of people would like to know the answer to that. LE friends in that area let me know there was a real serious search on for Vangs two partners.

In Wisconsin, Minnesota and "elsewhere". probably California.

Then about 2 weeks after the murders, all references got dropped, and the subject has been actively avoided ever since.

As in:

Q: "Hey, what about those other 2 guys?" "What happened there?"

A: "How about those Packers, think they've got a real shot at the Super Bowel this year?"

So, whatever the story is there, the people that know are not talking.

FWIW, it smells like something ongoing.

Always the chance that if Vang was involved, he might rat out his buddies for a better deal

If I hear anything, I'll post it, I'm not above passing on rumour and innuendo.
