I'm trying to find out if it would be feasible to buy some steel online that I will be using for various things in my build. I am looking for some flat and round pieces. I checked at my local Home Depot and they don't really have anything, but Lowe's had some flat steel but it seemed pretty high. I picked up a piece 1/4''x3x1.5 and it cost about 8.00. Does anyone know of an online place that sells steel in smaller amounts and doesn't kill you in shipping? The closest local place is about 30 miles away, and their hours aren't very permitting for people who work.

http://www.onlinemetals.com/ they have pretty much anything you would want but the shipping isn't cheap, bought $94.00 worth of steel (1018 mild steel - cold rolled and some 4130 normalized cold rolled) and shipping cost me $38.52 ($132.52 total). But hey, they had exactly what I wanted and cut some of the metal to my specifications at no cost. Now the amount of metal in the picture might not look like much, but it weighed a ton.

Most other places have minimum length (6 ft.) purchase requirements which can really get out of hand both for what you get and shipping.

I have a steel yard near me but I think they would charge me that much just for cut charges. I think you got a great deal , that is a lot of material and a LOT OF CUTS. Good call

Thanks guys! Well from the looks of it here mike, I see plinker's jig sitting sitting pretty close to that pile of steel. Wonder if he's going to use it to build another one of them expensive jigs. Is it me, or is that jig really expensive?

I bought a 1.25" x 1.75" x 1' piece of 1018 and a couple pieces of .5" x 1.25" x 1' 1018 for around 32 plus 8 for shipping...

I must be one of the lucky ones I have a large steel yard about 1/2 mile from my house and they dont charge me cutts at all. Everytime I go there they just smile and are probably wondering what this nut is building today. I also got 2 machine shops that dont charge much for little stuff close by and a muffler shop that a friend owns that welds for me for free.There is a heating and plumbing place up the street that is cheap for spot welding,if I get there close to lunch time it usually free. :headspin:

Is it me, or is that jig really expensive?

Yeah it is expensive, but for me it was worth it just to have Plinker drill the hole thru that big ass peice of round stock.. :headspin:
