Pics are hard to see, I think this is a great idea and would like to se more detailed pics. I was thinking of a milled (in aluminum) 22 ak for my son, More pics!, Better pics!

I think your "gas assist" will be a disappointment, testing has revealed the optimum bbl length for a .22LR is something between 14" and 16", any longer and the bullet slows down from friction as the gas has reached max pressure at the 14" point. Tapping gas off before this point will reduce velocity, after and the pressure will be even less. There's probably a reason why all .22 autos have been straight blowback.

 

This sounds like an interesting idea. Plus mag availability and price would definitely be a plus.

 

I am very interested in this build. I was going to build a 10/22 pistol. I have all the parts except for a receiver. I still have not decided if I want to find a 80% receiver or scratch build one. Now after seeing this I really like the idea of a AK22!

hmmmm... I wonder what would need to be done to have the ciener conversion work with 10/22 mags and a dedicated .22 LR barrel.

 

The "Bingham" mags that Ceiner uses for his conversions were originally sold with an adapter that locked into the magwell of a 10/22 and converted the rifle to accept these mags. So the feed lip area ought to be similar enough for the normal 10/22 type mags to work.

vz58 - I understand where you're coming from. That's why I bought mine (for an AR) through Kyle at ballistic sounds. Even though it is a ciener kit, I got great customer service from Kyle. http://www.ballisticsounds.com/

JAC might have crappy customer service but the kit does work as intended.

 

You're lucky- out of 4 kits (3 departmental and one personal) only 2 were reliable on auto. JAC literally could not have cared less when I was assigned to get them repaired or replaced. Eventually with much polishing the other departmental kit worked 80% of the time, but the personal... no way guess whose kit it was?

The bolt shouldn't be too hard to manufacture. Similar to a SA Sten bolt but rectangular instead of round. Extractor & Pin could be made or bought.

 

ak-22 build

The easiest 22 ak build is to buy a MPi-69 east german trainer and slap her together, these kits are hard to find but they run like a deer. mags are available for $15. the kit is a scaled down ak everything bit the triggerguard and receiver

I bought one of these kits a while back, I used a bent metal receiver as dimples are useless and there is no lower rail to weld in, the rivets are all the long ones so I used long electrical nuts and bolt(for quick take down) this kit was full auto and compliance parts are non-existant. the bolt is different as is the handguards and top cover

funny thing -
I ordered mpi-69 hammer spring last week along with a 10/22extractor,plunger and spring,i will take the C krinks advice and stick with blowback bolt working on aluminun/steel setup cotoured to feed off a 10/22 mag with a romy "G" charging handle.
